Hasina N. Rakouth
Hasina is a PhD student at the Faculty of Sciences of the University of Antananarivo, in the Department of Plant Biology and Ecology. Her PhD project is part of a research program called Sustainable Management of Precious Woods Dalbergia and Diospyros of Madagascar (G3D), scientific support to the implementation of the CITES action plan funded by the European Union. Her thesis focuses on the taxonomy of the genus Diospyros of the Ebenaceae family, or commonly known as ebony. Her goal is to clarify the taxonomic delimitation of the species in this genus which currently includes more than 250 known species endemic to Madagascar. Her research also aims to discover and describe new species and also to help and simplify species identification by developing tools, innovative methods or techniques which are based especially on observable persistent characters throughout the year crossed with eco-biogeographical ones (ex: bark, leaves, etc). And finally to predict the current and the future distribution of species taking into account the global climate and land-use changes, especially for those known as "large trees" or that represent sources of potentially exploitable wood, in order to help in strategy planning for effective management, development and sustainable control of potential exploitations or to conserve properly species that are threatened.
